53' Corrugated
Containers
Born from a need to compete with 53' highway
trailers, these largest-of-all intermodal containers are used
exclusively for shipments within North America. These corrugated
steel boxes, although heavier than 53' aluminum boxes, are
less expensive to build and repair and last longer. Like our
other containers, the deLuxe innovations 53' Corrugated Containers
will come in 2 packs with 2 different road numbers.
These
containers are easy to spot. Most paint schemes have a "53" on
the side. The stacking frames (where containers of various
lengths are connected above or
below the 53 footer) are sill at the standard 40' mark so
there is 6 and a half feet of overhang on either end of
the
stacking frame. Notice how much thicker the floor is on these
containers versus our 45', 40' and 20' containers.

American
President Lines acquired these 53’ boxes for domestic service
prior to their merger with Neptune Orient Line. After the merger, APL’s
domestic service was sold to Pacer Stacktrain. These containers, still with
their original lettering and road numbers, now operate as part of the Pacer
Stacktrain fleet. |

Swift (American Presidents' Line) 53'
Corrugated Container

In 2005, BNSF announced
that they would phase out their own container and trailer fleets.
Arrangements were made with highway carriers and logistics
companies
such as Swift and Hub Group to take over leases on BNSF boxes and acquire
new ones under their own flag. Swift set up a new subsidiary for this business
called Swift Intermodal and began to take delivery of these handsome boxes.
Unlike most containers, these boxes have conspicuity stripes much like highway
trailers. These containers are now a common site in intermodal trains. |

North
American Container System (NACS)
is a pool of domestic containers shared
between its member
railroads, BNSF, Canadian National, CSX, Kansas
City Southern, and Conrail. Presumably, CSX
took Conrail’s share when Big Blue was
split between CSX and Norfolk Southern. Though many
NACS containers formerly carried the flags
of the members, these 53 footers were delivered
new to NACS.

Alaska
Marine Lines uses ocean going barges to connect Alaska with
the port
of Seattle. Northbound loads are often groceries
while timber products and other Alaskan goods make
up the back-haul. Many of these back-hauls
warrant a train trip deep into the “ Lower 48.” |

Hub Group 53' Corrugated Containers

Hub
Group has long been a partner in BNSF container operations
with their logo
often sharing
space with the BNSF logo on domestic boxes. With BNSF’s
exit from the equipment business, Hub is going it alone
with these bright red boxes. Presumably, Hub is taking
sole possession of the fleet of 53’ boxes operated
with BNSF under the old arrangement. |

Item Description
|

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
