The Prototype
The EMD F40PH is synonymous with the Amtrak era of American passenger trains. Although it has been retired from Amtrak service, it operated for over 20 years. It continues to be the motive power for commuter railroads all over the United States. Over 400 F40PH locomotives have been manufactured by EMD in various configurations.

To support passenger service, the F40PH is equipped with a secondary electrical generator referred to as the head end generator (or HEP, for Head End Power). The need for constant constant frequency power means that these HEP units are constantly running at 900rpm, resulting in the nickname "Screamers" for the units due to the sound.

The Model

  • All locomotives are equipped with body mounted KATO magnetic knuckle couplers.
  • Locomotives feature directional Golden White LED headlights and illuminated preprinted number boards.
  • Locomotives are equipped with shock absorber construction for smooth and prototypical motion on the track.
  • Locomotives have a powerful five pole motor with all wheel electrical pickup and blackened wheels.
  • Additional alternate snow plow piece included for tight radius operation.
  • Designed to compliment the Amtrak Superliner Passenger Car Sets.
  • Drop in DCC compatible with the Train Control Systems K0D8-C and Digitrax DN163K0D.

Fifth Release

Chicago Metra EMD F40PH - Three road numbers

The follow up to the Chicago Metra MP36PH is finally here! Hotly demanded, and still in use to this day, the Chicago Metra F40PH will allow commuter rail modelers to portray the full range of Metra equipment by combining the new-tooling N Scale F40PH (with ditch lights and prototype accurate RV style air conditioners) with Kato USA’s releases of individual Metra Bi-level Coaches, MP36PH locomotives, and 3-Car bookcase style sets (which are designed to be adaptable to hold additional cars and locomotives!)

Fourth Release

Now modelers can enjoy modeling Amtrak trains from the early 90’s such as the Missouri River Runner, which operates between St. Louis and Kansas City, or the Hiawatha that operates between Chicago and Milwaukee!

This new production of EMD F40PH Phase III units fits these Amtrak locomotives with ditch lights and cab air conditioners – additions that came late in the F40PH’s service lifetime with Amtrak. This allows modelers to recapture their memories of Amtrak’s recent history while enjoying its iconic Phase III appearance along with matching Superliner or Amfleet II cars.  Amfleet II cars are now available in Phase III paint for the first time!

Third Release

By popular demand, Kato USA is expanding its line of commuter rail items with a brand new tooling version of the N scale EMD F40PH locomotive!

This release features brand new body shell tooling to represent the modern commuter version of this locomotive, such as over-the-cab air conditioner and illuminated ditch lights. The locomotive mechanism carries over the DCC friendly design of the Amtrak version, and the locomotive is perfectly suited for being combined with the newly releasing Nippon Sharyo Gallery Bi-Level Car three-packs with bookcase style carry case!

First Release (2005)

The F40PH went through some external changes during its production life and each railroad tended to order a custom package of headlights, horns, and other equipment that modelers call "details". Even Amtrak's several orders had multiple detail variations. The versions we have selected for this production represent locomotives equipped with radiator "Q-Fans" - a version never before offered.

Model Features:

  1. Equipped with Kato automatic magnetic couplers
  2. DCC-friendly mechanism
  3. Shock-absorber construction
  4. Golden-white LED directional headlight
  5. Illuminated numberboards
  6. Seprate beacon ad cab warning lamp detail for modeler customizing
  7. All-wheel electrical pickup and traditional KATO motor with dual brass flywheels

Stock Checks:

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders, the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms pages, we don’t do it anymore.
You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.
