Prototype
Information |
- The
"Dash 9" is one of today's most recognizable locomotives,
widely used on Class I mainline railroads.
- The
first year of production of this heavy freight
hauler by GE (General Electric Company) was 1993.
- This
behemoth locomotive can generate up to 4,400 horsepower.
- Besides
its sheer overall size, the Dash 9 is often recognized
by the flat radiators that extend over the edge
of the hood at the back of the locomotive.
- There
are several variations in the outward appearance
of the Dash 9. End handrails are commonly referred
to as "wide" or "narrow", while step wells may
be classified as "5-step" or "6-step." Location
of number boards may also differ between roads
("high" or "low"). The Santa Fe (and later BNSF)
units also feature the notched "gull wing" cab.
These differences are important to keep in mind
if you are working with an undecorated model or
bodyshell and wanting to paint it faithful to
a specific prototype.

Special Release Production
The
Last of their kind
Celebrate
the “DYNAMIC DUO”
Shipping February 2010
Kato is proud to announce a tribute to the last remaining
C44-9W’s running in their original Chicago & North
Western paint schemes - N and HO Scale model versions of
the #8646 and #8701. These two locomotives are the only
ex-C&NW locomotives still in service that have not been
repainted or patched over, and are a rolling tribute to
the historic railroad. These locomotives will be produced
in a limited, one-time-only production run, and it may very
well be the last time this Dynamic Duo (as they are known)
has an opportunity to find a place on your layout before
they enter the history books.
‡ - Because Kato is releasing these direct only and
not thru distributors, the pricing is higher to us. Our
pricing had to be adjusted accordingly.

Sixth Production
Kato is happy to announce the GE C44-9W
in both the Warbonnet and Heritage-III a/k/a "Swoosh"
paint schemes. As you can see from the photos, they can
be operated in various combinations, even with other railroads.
The Warbonnet being offered is one of earliest BNSF paint
schemes and the BNSF H-3 “Swoosh” is one of
the newest paint schemes. So you can combine them on your
layout and still be prototypically correct.
Wig-Wag Note: Sit trackside along the
BNSF Transcon in NM, AZ, CA and you will can see these units
every day mixed and matched on multiple trains.

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
