The modern Nippon Sharyo-built Gallery Bi-Level is based off of the same concept as the original Santa Fe “El Capitan” Bi-level design concept, whose success went on to inspire such double decker cars as Amtrak’s Superliners and the Bombardier Bi-Level car which is also used in commuter service. Today, gallery Bi-Level cars such as those used by the Chicago Metra commuter service can be seen operating in several states across the United States, such as Virginia and California.

The Kato model will make use of a body mounted coupler on the tail end of the Cab-Coaches in order to provide room for the necessary plow details (this is the front of the train half of the time, after all) while maintaining a 9 3/4" minimum curve radius.

Like the HO Bi-Level Cab coaches, the N scale Cab-Coach will have an on/off switch on the underside that will allow you to disable to directional lighting when running the cab-coach in the middle of a consist.

Even though most model train layouts are looked at from above, it is important to have the low-body details as well as these are often what people are the most familiar with, considering the angle that trains are normally seen from.

The Metra Bi-Levels have a "blanked" space on one side of the cars which denotes the presence of the car's restrooms. The other windows are tinted green - just like the real thing - and provide a view of the interior seating on both the upper and lower levels of the car.

Here you can see the interior cabin and special end-cab parts which house lightpiping for transmitting the light to the directional head and tail lights on the end of the cab-coach.

This cutaway view of the cab-coach shows how the interior of the Nippon Sharyo cars have been designed to take Kato's interior lighting kits, as they sandwich between the upper and lower layers of the car, sending light in both directions.

Item Description Pricing & Order Link

Stock Checks:

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders, the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms pages, we don’t do it anymore.
You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.
