From Wikipedia The Free Encyclopedia:
"The City of Los Angeles was a streamlined passenger train that ran between Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California, via Omaha, Nebraska and Ogden, Utah. Between Omaha and Los Angeles, the train was operated by the Union Pacific Railroad. East of Omaha, the train was operated by the Chicago and North Western Railway until 1955, and by the Milwaukee Road thereafter.
This train was the top-of-the-line for UP, which marketed it as a direct competitor to the Super Chief, a streamlined passenger train operated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and the Golden State, a streamlined passenger train jointly operated by the Rock Island and Southern Pacific railroads. As with the City of Los Angeles, many of the train's cars bore the names of locales in and around its namkesake city.
CNW / UP used one of only two EMC E2 locomotives ever built as motive power for the train beginning in 1937. The UP scored a public relations coup in the mid-1950s when the City of Los Angeles was prominently featured in two consecutive episodes of the then popular television series I Love Lucy. In 1955 the Milwaukee Road assumed the service, replacing the Chicago and North Western between Chicago and Omaha. Actor, (later President) Ronald Reagan often traveled on this train and even did a full page print ad for it that appeared in the National Geographic magazine.
Timeline
- May 15, 1936: The weekly City of Los Angeles makes its first run between Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California.
- 1941: The Hollywood, a lounge car built for use on the City of Los Angeles, becomes the first passenger car whose interior is built entirely out of synthetic materials, which featured the newly-invented materials formica (plastic) and naugahyde.
- 1947: The City of Los Angeles train frequency is upgraded to daily.
- 1955: Dome cars are added to the City of Los Angeles as regular equipment. The Milwaukee Road takes over operation of the City of Los Angeles from the Chicago and North Western Railway between Chicago and Omaha.
- 1956: The Challenger and the City of Los Angeles are combined into a single train, operated on the City of Los Angeles schedule.
- 1970: Dome dining cars retired and replaced with standard flat top cars.
- May 1, 1971: UP-operated long-distance rail service ends when the City of Los Angeles arrives at Los Angeles Union Station. On the same date Amtrak takes over long-distance passenger operations in the United States."

(2005) Release

City
Series Release -- 2005 Prototype Information
"Streamliners"
were operated by Union Pacific, Chicago & North Western,
and Southern Pacific with some equipment "pooling"
with Wabash and other railroads. The most famous trains were
the City of Los Angeles and the City of San Francisco, departing
from Chicago, IL for the West. Additional trains were known
as the City of Portland and the City of St. Louis.
The biggest partners, UP and C&NW, advertised "Route
of the Streamliners" on their box cars. In essence, each
of the partner railroads "owned" portions of the
train; they were true partners, not simply connecting railroads.
ACF Industries Photo, Ed Hawkins Collection. |
Today,
these trains remain among the best remembered of all
postwar lightweight passenger trains. Even today,
the Union Pacific Historic Fleet, used for company
business as well as special excursions, continues
the long tradition of yellow and gray passenger trains.

Model Features
—
Three different car sets decorated in Union
Pacific colors create a complete 12-car train without duplication
of cars. Some cars are lettered for railroads that "pooled"
the cars with Union Pacific.
All cars have accurate detail and painting and are equipped
with Kato Magnetic Knuckle Couplers. Blackened metal wheels
with all-wheel electrical pickup for optional
lighting kits (sold separately) provide smooth operation.
These passenger cars are ideal for use
with the Union
Pacific F3 Locomotives released by Kato in 2004, 2006 &
2007.

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
