Flat
Side Woodchip Cars:
Time Marches On! The railroads asked for a new design that
was faster to unload, and didn't require as much shaking of
the car, and FMC responded. When the Southern Pacific came
calling to suppliment and replace their gigantic fleet of
diagonal braced wood sheathed cars, FMC developed the roll
over version of the woodchip car. This car was to be unloaded
in a new universal rotary unloader that eliminated the tilting
lift track, and required far less time to unload the cars.
It was almost automated! The car still was built for capacity,
and also built with bracing that keep the huge expanse of
steel sheet from buckling.

Central Oregon & Pacific
(CORP) Part #: DI-170601
Central Oregon & Pacific was established in 1994 to take
over operation of Southern Pacific's line through the Siskiyou
Mountains in Southern and Central Oregon. Timber is the main
industry for this region, so CORP leased a number of former
SP wood chip gondolas to serve it. The conversion to CORP
consisted of covering over the "SP" in the reporting
marks and adding CORP in white over a black rectangle. The
original SP numbers were used. Since these cars were battered
when CORP took possession and have never really been "clean,"
we are presenting this run Factory Weathered based on actual
CORP cars. The semi-geometric rust pattern comes from contact
with the rotary dumper.
