Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it - and - while we are waiting for the order
it sells - you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders - the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So - as we spell out on our terms
pages - we don’t do it anymore. You may - however - call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
Please place your order using our SECURE Shopping Cart site:
http://wig-wag-trains-cart.com/home
If you MUST send an e-mail inquiry - copy & paste the entire description TEXT ONLY (NO pictures!) from the
item you are ordering into your e-mail.
It will save time and reduce confusion in determining
what you
are inquiring about.
With the quantity of lines we carry it's not possible to memorize all of them.

Delaware & Hudson rebuilt more than 300 of their USRA hoppers with panel sides. D&H linked the anthracite belt in northeastern Pennsylvania with upstate New York and Montreal. When D&H’s large fleet of hoppers wasn’t hauling anthracite (a hard, clean-burning form of coal) they could be seen moving iron and titanium ore.

Missouri Pacific rebuilt 425 of their hoppers with panel sides before the start of the Second World War. If you weren’t from the region, you might think MP would not be much of a coal hauler. In fact, MP moved considerable amounts of coal from Illinois, Missouri, Texas and Colorado had maintained a fleet of many thousands of hopper cars.

New York Central rebuilt about 360 of their USRA hoppers with panel sides – many using a special formulation of copper bearing steel to better resist the corrosion endemic to hopper cars. By the time these cars were out-shopped in 1937, NYC had been asserting more control over the railroads in their empire for a few years, this was reflected in a change to the logo seen here. New York Central Lines has become New York Central System.

Rock Island picked up 105 of these panel side hoppers secondhand during the 1950s. This was a hopeful era for Rock Island. The troubled re-organization during the 1940s was behind them and the endless, convoluted, and ultimately pointless merger discussions and the bankruptcy that followed were still unseen over the horizon.

Wabash re-built 400 of their USRA 30’6” hoppers into panel side cars in the 1930s. They must have been generally pleased with the results because they would later build hundreds of 33’ cars with very similar panels. Wabash was unique in that it could claim the role of “Eastern road” with its service to Detroit and Buffalo, and “Granger road” with its lines to Kansas City and Omaha. No other railroad reached so far into these two regions.

The Central Vermont ran from the Atlantic coast port of New London, Connecticut north to the Canadian border. From the outset, they had been controlled by Grand Trunk Railway and their successor Canadian National. This group of 200 hoppers received their panel sides beginning in 1937.

November 18 - BLMA has announced a new release of their Bx-166 "Beer Cars" for delivery next summer. This release will come in three new schemes including: 1) The initial re-patch version from Santa Fe to BNSF; 2) The first BNSF scheme; and 3) The current "wedge" or "Powerboat" scheme. Each scheme will come in 8 road numbers. George and Debra are very familiar with these cars, when they made the trips to the Denver shows there was a group of about 40 parked on a siding south of Walsenburg and north of Trinidad. Almost a static display like the hoppers of Big Ten Curve. Best Price deadline at Wig-Wag is before Noon MST on January 13th. Don't wait to order! Lots of time to budget for these. November 14 - Wheels of Time has posted their Trainfest announcement of a totally new model for N-Scale. The - 53'-6" General Service Welded Fish Belly Flat Car as they describe them: "
These General Service 53'-6" flat cars were constructed with a welded fish-belly frame. The fish-belly frame provided an optimal distribution of tension and compression forces from the center of the car to the bolsters. In addition, fabricating a welded frame was less labor intensive than an equivalent riveted frame. The welded frame proved extremely durable holding up to really rugged service where the wood deck or the nailable wood-steel deck would need to be replace couple of times during the life of most cars. These flats commonly found it's way into maintenance-of-way service because they were still in good shape beyond the AAR interchange car-age limit. A number of builders constructed these flat cars such as the Pacific Car & Foundry (P.C. & F.), Marine Industries (Canada), Pullman-Standard, Bethlehem Steel, and including individual railroad car shops such as the Milwaukee Road and the Southern Pacific.
They were designated as FM by the AAR mechanical people. They carried anything bulky that can't be placed in box cars from tractors to finished lumber.
Wheels of Time Model Features -

November 10 - Kato is announcing a new model for N Scale - the EMD SDP40F Type I is coming for Amtrak® in the Phase I & II paint Schemes. The SDP40F is "
The Original Amtrak locomotives". Here are some historical and model details:
- The first locomotive built specifically for Amtrak® service!
- Like the prototype - the SDP40F is based off of the Kato SD40-2 Early Drive - making it a proven and reliable mechanical design that will be easily up-gradable with a decoder for DCC operation!
- W-W Comment: The Prototype SDP40F was designed using the SD40-2 which was hugely successful for EMD. The reasoning was that if Amtrak folded for lack of funding which was highly possible the locomotives could easily sold to freight railroads and the costs recovered. Unfortunately due to the carbody mounted water tanks they suffered the same problems that the ATSF U28CG & U30CG's did; water sloshing in the tanks on curves made them unstable and some derailments were the result. Several roads refused to allow them on their rails. Santa Fe having been through the issue knew how to compensate and ended up getting 18 in a trade when they were replaced leaving the others to be stripped for parts that were re-furbished and incorporated into the later F40PH. The best of intentions resulted in an SD40-2 that almost nobody wanted. PLEASE lobby Kato to also make the ATSF versions
- Coming in both Phase I and Phase II Classic paint schemes – a perfect pairing for the Amtrak “El Capitan” Car Set! (pictured below)
- Model 70’s and 80’s early Amtrak trains with your existing cars or keep an eye out for future releases of early Amtrak rolling stock!
Delivery is scheduled for April & May of 2016. Best Price deadline at Wig-Wag is Noon MDT - December 5th. Don't wait to order! We DO NOT order extras for inventory. If you wait - you take the risk of not being able to get the product.

Part #: MTL-986-00-541 - Southern Pacific® - Road #: s 2638 - EMD SW1500 Locomotive - Southern Pacific Railroad's diesel locomotive fleets saw a number of paint schemes over the life of the railroad. Best known of all was the more common “Bloody Nose” version of overall dark grey with bright red ends giving it that name. Lettering also evolved with the final style before merging with Union Pacific® being known as “Speed Lettering” given its forward leaning script style. Wig-Wag Note: "Bloody Nose" - a railfan term - referred to the red "wings" that wrapped around the nose of the E & F-units which initially wore the scheme and later GP & SD style carbody locomotives. The switchers did not get the wings but the moniker was still used. The Speed Lettering was an homage to and a modification to the "Flying Rio" Scheme that the D&RGW was using at the merger with SP. Initially locos had the lettering leaning away from the front on both sides to indicate speed. Rio Grande eventually lost or damaged the right hand stencil and stopped having different lettering for left vs right sides. The result was on side appeared to be leaning forward while the other was being blown backward. Upon the merger - SP adopted a modified version. |

November 1 - Pontification Time: While I hunkered down here in Mogote bivouacked near the RR working on the Rapido announcement (that I hope will be complete in an hour) I was listening to Sirius XM 70's on 7 for Casey Kasem's American Top 40. As he counted down to Gladys Knight & the Pips Midnight Train to Georgia (their first #1 on 10/27/73) I was once again reminded of Sunday nights spent doing homework and counting down with Kasey. Then I was troubled by all the consternation the Casem family has gone through since his passing. I sit here in the cold of the San Luis Valley and pray that they can once and finally find the peace and tranquility that Kasey brought so many of my generation especially as he concluded each week with this phrase: "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the Stars." Now that AT40 has concluded for this week I will put in the Garth Brooks DVD from Wynn Las Vegas - the "Blame it all on My Roots" Concert. What better day can one have? |

A Note on
Stock Status:
Not all items can be in stock at all
times. Due to minimum order requirements from manufacturers
and distributors and shipping charges - we "bunch"
up re-orders to save you money. Sometimes it takes longer -
but we can continue to offer the item at a substantial discount
that way.
Confused about Reservations?
Please consider that this is the way
we pay the bills and put food on the table. Taking pre-orders
allows us to order enough to cover known demand. We attempt
to gauge (ok - guess) how many will be ordered after the order
deadline plus allow us to have the item in stock for 45-60
days after shipment by the manufacturer.
Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we don't. Occasionally -
when an item is not likely to be produced again (D&RGW
H-15-44s for example) we order beyond our guess to have a
few for longer than that.
