Pullman
Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars
Bluford Shops is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard
86’ Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door
versions. These cars have injection molded plastic bodies,
etched metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately
appearing trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.
These cars first appeared in the mid-60s and are still in
use today. Unlike general service freight cars, auto parts
boxes are assigned to pools based on a mileage formula and
often spend most of their time off home rails. In other words,
“foreign road” cars usually out-number home road
cars in a given parts train to the point that if you missed
the locomotives passing, you would have a hard time telling
whose train it was! That makes for colorful and interesting
trains that are fun to model.

Delivered in 1966, this group of PRR cars was the
largest batch ever delivered of this type of car.
PRR had such a huge freight car fleet (over 112,000
cars of all types) that a typical mixed freight anywhere
in the country was statistically certain to have some
PRR cars in it! |

WP had a large Ford plant on line at Milpitas, California

a large multi-plant pool, a number of WP cars could
be seen moving parts between the South and Midwest
as well. |

PC 237851 had been delivered in PRR paint but shortly
after the 1968 Penn Central merger, the car was renumbered
and the PRR keystone covered by the new PC logo. Apparently
the PRR tuscan red was in too good a shape to warrant
repainting the whole car green. (Single only-no 2pk.) |

These
are definitely the flashiest cars in the entire Southern
Pacific / Cotton Belt fleet! Delivered in 1967 this
batch was initially assigned to loading at a Ford
stamping plant in Buffalo (needless to say, far from
Cotton Belt or SP rails!) By 1974, they received their
constencils and appeared as you see here. Amazingly,
there are a number of these cars still in service
in their original paint! |

Southern
had a large fleet of 86’ auto parts boxcars
over the years with a wide variety of paint scheme
variations. Beginning in 1969, Southern began using
the “GIVES A GREEN LIGHT TO INNOVATIONS”
motto. Ordinarily, cars equipped with cushion under
frames such as these, had “SUPER CUSHION SERVICE”spelled
out to the right of the door. However, this batch
from Pullman Standard had “SOUTHERN SERVES THE
SOUTH” instead. Go figure...! |

In
recent years, a portion of Norfolk Southern’s
massive auto parts box fleet has appeared in this rather
glitzy scheme. This scheme even includes the name spelled
out in a style not used on their locomotives. The inclusion
of the stallion logo is also noteworthy. Perhaps the
special treatment reflects the high value of the cargo
carried. The three road numbers in this run are from
cars built by Greenville in the early 70s. |

#: BS-86131 NYC - Conrail -- double door single
car |

With
the split of Conrail between Norfolk Southern and
CSX looming, the road began marking cars destined
for the CSX fleet with NYC reporting marks. Though
few if any former New York Central cars still existed
with their original numbers, the NYC reporting mark
was still assigned to Conrail by the AAR. With the
split of Conrail complete, the AAR reassigned the
NYC reporting mark to CSX. NYC 241043 was originally
built for Penn Central in their Despatch Shops. Since
receiving it’s Conrail paint, the right door
was replaced with an unpainted aluminum door from
another car. Note also this car still has it’s
pre-1983 con-stencil format (the black and white boxes
on the far right) although the data inside follows
current practices. |

|
Following
the Conrail split, NYC 237739 had a left door replaced
by CSX. The serviced door had come from a blue CSX
or Chessie car and still had it’s instruction
lettering in yellow. NYC 239261 may have (probably
did have) door work in it’s past but it sports
a matching set! Door work is common on these large
cars due to body flex in the loading process. In fact,
all doors must be opened during loading so the body
will flex evenly. The doors must be opened and closed
in a certain order based on instructions printed on
the doors. |

Built
in 1967, this car was in a pool assigned for loading
at a Ford plant in Monroe, Michigan (on the New York
Central.) Many think of L&N as a big Appalachian
coal road, which of course they were, but they also
served many manufacturing centers including Atlanta,
Knoxville, Cincinnati, Louisville & Nashville (duh!),
Memphis, St. Louis, Birmingham, Montgomery, and after
1971 Indianapolis and Chicago! |

Item Description
|
| |
Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
