Pullman
Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars
Bluford Shops
is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard 86’
Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door versions.
These cars have injection molded plastic bodies, etched
metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately appearing
trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.
These cars first
appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use today. Unlike
general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned
to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most
of their time off home rails. In other words, “foreign
road” cars usually out-number home road cars in a
given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives
passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train
it was! That makes for colorful and interesting trains that
are fun to model.

2 Canadian provinces. The freight car fleet was a
whopping 78,000+ cars. New York Central blanketed
southern Michigan as well as auto manufacturing centers
in Indiana, Ohio, western New York and others, making

Norfolk & Western’s 86’ boxcar fleet
was very large, reflecting the importance of the auto
business to predecessor Wabash whom N&W leased
in 1964. This large batch was delivered in the Spring
of ‘65 in this paint scheme. They were initially
assigned for loading on the Chicago Heights Terminal
& Transfer (now part of UP.) Note that N&W
used an alternate version of the “hamburger
logo” on their auto parts cars with a taller
“N&W”. We’ll call this the “extra-meat”
version of the hamburger... |

This
batch of Central of Georgia cars was also delivered
in the summer of ‘66 and also initially assigned
for loading in Cleveland, although at a Ford’s
Walton Hills plant. The 1,700+ mile Central of Georgia
blanketed much of Georgia and Alabama with branches
to Tennessee and Florida. In the early 60’s,
Southern gained control of the CoG and their influence
spread into the lettering styles used on CoG’s
8,000+ car fleet. |

Magenta -- double door single car |

As
you would expect, DT&I had a HUGE fleet of 86’
auto parts cars and in a variety of paint schemes.
In addition to variations of Sky Blue and Cypress
Green, DT&I had these Magenta cars. This particular
group was built by Penn Central in their shops for
the DT&I. DT&I was owned by a PC holding company
at the time. Without a doubt, DT&I had the nation’s
most colorful freight car fleet, but these magenta
monsters really take the cake. |

In 1980, Chicago & North Western changed from
boxcar red to this yellow and black scheme with a
three-color logo on many boxcars. The C&NW logos
also changed over the years. These cars were delivered
in brown with yellow and black “Chicago and
North Western Railway” logos which was later
replaced by “Employee - North Western - Owned”
but by the time these cars were painted yellow, they
had long since switched to “Chicago and North
Western System.” |

CP Rail’s auto parts fleet includes former Milwaukee
Road cars like these. The 2-pack is shown here. The
lettering arrangement for the single is the same as
the upper image. The painted door bars and area around
the door latches on this batch seems to be unique
to CP Rail. |

single car |

In 1983, the merger-enlarged Union Pacific adopted
this paint scheme. Cars from the WP and MoPac fleets
carried their original road numbers. The single car
has a UP number while the 2-pack has Western Pacific
and Missouri Pacific road numbers. Note the variations
in placement of other lettering. Even the logo on
the UP car is in a different place. This kind of variation
seems to be common on today’s Union Pacific
fleet. |

Item Description
|
| |
Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
