Pullman
Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars
Bluford Shops
is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard 86’
Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door versions.
These cars have injection molded plastic bodies, etched
metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately appearing
trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.
These cars first
appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use today. Unlike
general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned
to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most
of their time off home rails. In other words, “foreign
road” cars usually out-number home road cars in a
given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives
passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train
it was! That makes for colorful and interesting trains that
are fun to model.

|
Erie Lackawanna had a large fleet of double door 86 footers purchased from Greenville between 1965 and 1966. Like all auto parts cars, they operated in large multi-railroad pools and often spent extended periods off home rails. The yellow “CUSHIONED CAR” logo is essentially the same as one used on similar Pennsylvania and Frisco 86 footers. |

In January of 1969, when these cars arrived from Greenville, Chicago Burlington & Quincy was preparing for merger with parents Great Northern and Northern Pacific (and sibling SP&S.) New equipment was being delivered in Cascade Green with “BURLINGTON ” in the new style lettering and CB&&Q reporting marks. After the merger, they expected to add “NORTHERN ” and change the number. However, small changes in the lettering style led BN to abandon this plan and completely repaint the cars only when they came up for major shopping. We photographed one of these cars still in original lettering in California in 1996, 26 years after the BN merger! This roadname will be available in 3 road numbers. |

The 7,100 mile Illinois Central Gulf was well positioned
to handle lucrative auto parts traffic between the
upper midwest and the central south and therefore
contributed sizable fleets of 86’ cars to the
national fleet. A number of these bright orange cars
can still be seen in service for current owner Canadian
National. |

Louisville & Nashville received their last 86’
boxcars in 1977 and they were delivered in the Family
Lines paint scheme. The Family Lines consisted of
Seaboard Coast Line, L&N, Georgia, Clinchfield,
and the two lines of the West Point Route. The Family
Lines was not a single company, but rather a marketing
image. In 1983, L&N merged with Seaboard Coast
Line under the name Seaboard System and since the
two jointly controlled the other Family Lines roads,
they were included too. These cars are now part of
CSX’s fleet. |

After
a number of troubled years, M-K-T brought in John
W. Barriger III, a railroad turnaround specialist
who worked wonders for Monon, P&LE and others.
Barriger made new freight cars a priority and this
batch of auto parts cars delivered in 1969 was a direct
result. Several assembly plants in the sun belt served
by the Katy required them to contribute cars to various
86’ car pools. |

GTW had a big fleet to begin with and acquired many
more when they merged the DT&I. A majority of
the GTW fleet had their aluminum doors painted blue
with the rest of the body but many silver door cars
remained. We are including a car with silver doors
in the 2-pack. |

Chessie also had a mix of silver and blue door cars.
Since the doors were aluminum, they didn’t require
painting but that distinction wasn’t always
made in the shops. For this run, the single has silver
doors. |

Item Description

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
