Pullman
Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars
Bluford Shops
is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard 86’
Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door versions.
These cars have injection molded plastic bodies, etched
metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately appearing
trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.
These cars first
appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use today. Unlike
general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned
to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most
of their time off home rails. In other words, “foreign
road” cars usually out-number home road cars in a
given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives
passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train
it was! That makes for colorful and interesting trains that
are fun to model.

Pennsylvania received this group of quad-door cars
in 1965 whereupon they were assigned to carrying Chevy
body panels. GM, as a rule, preferred quaddoor cars
over their double door cohorts. Unlike most PRR double
door cars, this batch of quad door cars had black
ends (probably “car-cement” rather than
black paint) and we are replicating this detail on
our run. |

This batch of cars appeared on the UP in the summer
of 1966 in this paint scheme. The shield includes
the word “RAILROAD” which was standard
for UP in the 60’s. This batch also included
the small version of the reporting marks. The “automated
rail way” logo had evolved over the years with
this version featuring a more playful lettering style,
larger map, and “CUSHIONED LOAD” replacing
“CUSHION RIDE.” These cars were initially
assigned for loading at a Chevy plant on the New York
Central in Cleveland. |

Penn Central inherited their quad door car fleet from
both New York Central and Pennsylvania. The combined
PC fleet of 86’ boxcars was the largest in the
nation, with Conrail inheriting the title after 1976.
This group was assigned for loading at a Chevy plant
in Flint, Michigan on the Grand Trunk Western for
delivery to Chevy assembly lines across the country. |

(MP) -- quad door single car |

Missouri Pacific purchased 86’ boxcars under
the auspices of MP, Texas & Pacific, and Kansas
Oklahoma & Gulf subsidiaries, plus inheriting
some from Chicago & Eastern Illinois. In the late
70s, as the Screaming Eagle logo began to supplant
the old buzzsaw, MP was already changing the reporting
marks of these subsidiary cars to MP. This paint scheme
was being applied by the MoPac right up to the acquisition
by Union Pacific in 1983.. |

Item Description

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
