Pullman
Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars
Bluford Shops
is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard 86’
Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door versions.
These cars have injection molded plastic bodies, etched
metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately appearing
trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.
These cars first
appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use today. Unlike
general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned
to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most
of their time off home rails. In other words, “foreign
road” cars usually out-number home road cars in a
given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives
passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train
it was! That makes for colorful and interesting trains that
are fun to model.

This batch of quad-door cars was delivered to Southern Railway during the Spring of 1965. They were initially assigned for loading at a General Motors plant on the Grand Trunk Western in Flint, Michigan. Southern had a number of “paper railroad ” subsidiaries and portions of the freight car fleet were allocated to these subsidiaries. This group of cars was allocated to the Cincinnatti New Orleans & Texas Pacific. The CNO&TP initials are in the top right corner of each side of the car. |

Detroit & Toledo Shore Line received this batch of cars from Greenville early in 1970. The D&TS was just 50 miles long linking Detroit with Toledo but was double tracked and handled a large volume of traffic. Grand Trunk Western and Norfolk & Western (formerly Nickel Plate) each owned a 50% interest in the line. N&W used it to reach Detroit and GTW used it to reach Toledo. It's position gave it a vital role in the movement of auto parts. In 1981, GTW bought N&W ’s share and merged the line into its system. These cars joined the GTW fleet, some remaining in this paint scheme for close to two decades. |

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
