Pullman Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars

Bluford Shops is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door versions. These cars have injection molded plastic bodies, etched metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately appearing trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.

These cars first appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use today. Unlike general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most of their time off home rails. In other words, “foreign road” cars usually out-number home road cars in a given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train it was! That makes for colorful and interesting trains that are fun to model.

Part #: BS-87161 Rio Grande- Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Quad door Hi-Cube boxcar
Rio Grande received these quad door cars from Pullman Standard in the Summer of 1966. They were initially assigned for loading at a GM plant on the Pennsylvania RR in Indianapolis. Rio Grande had no assembly plants on line, but since they served as a bridge route for traffic between plants, they joined the appropriate multi-railroad equipment pools.

Part #: BS-87131 – Rock Island – Single - 86ft Quad door Hi-Cube boxcar

Rock Island received these quad door cars in the Summer of 1966. Auto parts traffic on the Rock Island was fairly significant with bridge traffic in addition to assembly plants located on line. Most of the “Granger Railroads” kept largely to one side or the other of a border stretching from St. Louis to Kansas City and on to Denver. C&NW and MILW for instance were to the north of the line while M-K-T and Frisco were to the south. Rock Island was the only line to have more or less equal portions on both sides of this line. Going from Minneapolis to Dallas? Rock Island was your single-line option.

Part #: BS-87132 – Rock Island – 2-Pack – 86ft Quad door Hi-Cube boxcar

Part #: BS-87141 – Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) – Single - 86ft Quad door Hi-Cube boxcar

Baltimore & Ohio received a large batch of these cars from Greenville in 1969 and 1970. Unlike B&O’s earlier batches of quad door cars, these came with unpainted natural aluminum doors and a pair of capitol dome logos on each side (one in yellow and one in blue on a yellow disk.) B&O’s auto parts fleet was lopsided in favor of quad door cars, reflecting the predominance of General Motors traffic on the line.

Item Description

Stock Checks:

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders, the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms pages, we don’t do it anymore.
You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.
